Brand, That Other B-word.

“You’re A Brand!”

“A brand?

Yes, you are a brand.”

I was so surprised to hear this comment from a good friend. This happened some months ago and I forget all about. Until, I started to do my research on subjects like (social media) marketing and brand awareness. Subsequently, my friend’s words were actually referring to a notion. Anything and anyone who is involved with my studio, is in fact contributing and co-creating the brand.

This happened some months ago and I forget all about. Until, I started to do my research on subjects like (social media) marketing and brand awareness. Subsequently, my friend’s words were actually referring to a notion. Anything and anyone who is involved with my studio, is in fact contributing and co-creating the brand.

Although a lot of people might think that it’s just the ‘housing’ of a company, it’s more than the name that is given or the product’s fancy features. Initially, I only thought of the ‘big labels’ or ‘renowned artists’ to be brands. That there should be a huge number of followers before you could mention the B-word. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Deeper Than Branding

Let’s dig a little bit deeper. Brand is not just the noun. I’m referring to the verb. The activity that leads to up to the desired result and not the result. Off course, you’re important but what people actually are looking at, sharing and buying is a piece of you in the product; the art. Better yet, the brand. 

The fact that we (as artists) have to call our canvas, drawing, illustration or sketch a product. Cringe! At least, for me it was a cringing thought to do so in the very beginning. However, you better start if you didn’t do this already.

Anything & Everyone

At the moment, you’ll probably refer back to the second paragraph of this post. If not, don’t worry about it.My friend’s words were referring to that fact that anything and anyone who is involved with MCJ Studio is in fact contributing and creating the brand.

I’m reading it myself, too, again. I still stand by it. It involves everyone and anything.

Everyone

With everyone I mean your audience, team and of course you. I literally see nothing about this very important of creating a brand.

Your audience affiliates with your art. They are willing to share, buy and take time out of their day to acknowledge you and your product or service. They’re willing to comment on your work on how they feel about it. They are open to get inspired by your work and tell others about it. At least, that is what we hope that they will do.

We all know that it’s a tedious task to engage an audience. It requires their attention for longer than a minute. Most people want to read the essence of the post within one minute before they continue to read.

However, investing in your brand means that you care about your audience. Your audience and mine want more. I believe in that whole hardheartedly. They want to know. Definitely the premium stuff that is not shared on a social media platform. Without my audience, my brand won’t have longevity. Their engagement matters for the brand.

Anything

With anything, I mean the instruments that are used to increase the reach of a brand. Listen, I rather increase my reach with one extra engaged reader to my audience above anything else.

Consequently, I can’t tell you which one of the many social media platform or management tool is the best one. However, the one that flows naturally in your lifestyle is the one to pick. If you don’t like to verbally talk, you might want to engage in written storytelling or beautiful photography. Anything that will help you visualize the brand. This on itself is a great subject that really needs it’s own post. I’ll promise you I will talk about that more.

Put Your Brand In To It.

The way that I was looking at it, was solely looking the name that it carried. Subsequently, this meant that I limited and marginalized all other variables in this equation. The notion that branding means this is like a death penalty for any artist.

I definitely believe that there are more variables that will help you develop your brand with the social media and management tools. Like, yeah, the metric matter. I wish I could tell you something different. It is in fact, a science to figure out the right tags before posting. It’s a great task to manage your time and effort wisely. It’s what makes you and your brand look effortless. No, it’s not but we can make look that way and it’s kind of sexy.
